PLANT DISEASE DIAGNOSTICS

COLLECTING PLANT SPECIMENS FOR DISEASE DIAGNOSIS
  1. Examine the plants and growing site thoroughly.
  2. Collect several plant specimens. Samples should have representative examples of all stages of disease development.
  3. When possible, collect the entire plant with the root system still intact. If the whole plant can not be submitted, search for discoloured tissue in branches showing symptoms.
  4. As far as possible, select samples of living plants, post mortems doesn’t always provide the necessary answers.
  5. Fill out the accompanying form as completely as possible. We need all the evidence we can get to unravel the mystery of some plant diseases.

PACKAGING AND SENDING OF DISEASED MATERIAL

  1. Use plastic bags to prevent the desiccation of material. If the material is soggy, wet or fleshy, rather use brown paper bags or something similar.
  2. Do not add water or wet paper towels, this will enhance saprophytic fungal growth which obscures the real problem and may even destroy the sample completely.
  3. Label the samples properly on the outside of the packaging.
  4. Package delicate material in a sturdy box.
  5. Send material preferably as early as possible in the week and avoid weekends. Use overnight courier services, posted living plant material may arrive as compost :-)
  6. Seed samples for analysis may however be posted.

PLANTSIEKTE DIAGNOSE

VERSAMELING VAN PLANTMONSTERS VIR SIEKTEDIAGNOSE
  1. Ondersoek die plante en plantomgewing deeglik.
  2. Versamel verskeie plante.
  5. Vul die meegaande vorm so volledig as moontlik in.

As die materiaal egter nat, papperig of vlesig is, gebruik liewer bruinpapiersakke of iets soortgelyks.
  4. Verpak delikate materiaal in ‘n stewige kartondoos.
  6. Saadmonsters vir ontleding kan egter gepos word.
